Maintenance by Platelets- Blood Clotting
Blood clotting is a mechanism that prevents the loss of blood from the site of an injury or wound by forming a blood clot.
In case of any injury when bleeding occurs, loss of blood from the system has to be minimized. Bleeding leads to a loss of pressure which reduces the efficiency of the pumping system.
To prevent this, blood has platelet cells which circulate around the body and form a mesh-like network or clot at the site of injury.

Maintenance by Platelets
3 Steps of Maintenance By Platelets to form a Clot
Platelets form a clot in 3 steps
- Adhesion
- Activation
- Aggregation
Also Check – Composition Of Blood
Adhesion
Platelets reach the site of injury and become sticky, sticking to the borders of the wound.
Activation
Platelets then change their shape and start secreting chemicals to attract more platelets to the injury site.
Aggregation
Platelets connect to each other and form a plug which prevents blood from flowing out.
