  • The Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER) is a network of flattened, stacked sacs and tubules that are located near the nucleus in eukaryotic cells. 
  • It is called “Rough” because it has many ribosomes attached to its surface, which gives it a granular appearance under a microscope.

  1. Protein synthesis

The Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)  is the site of protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells. Ribosomes bind to the RER and use the information in the mRNA to synthesize new proteins. These proteins are then transported to the lumen of the RER for further processing and modification.

  1. Protein folding

Once the protein is synthesized, it needs to be folded into its correct conformation in order to function properly. The Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER) is equipped with a variety of groups of proteins and other molecules that help the protein fold into its correct shape.
