Ribosomes Definition:

Ribosomes are considered as one of the most important cell organelles composed of RNA and protein that converts genetic code into chains of amino acids.Ribosomes are found in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and every living cell requires ribosomes for the production of proteins.

Discovery of Ribosomes:

George E. Palade discovered Ribosomes in 1955.

Structure of Ribosomes:

  • Located and scattered in two areas of cytoplasm.
  • Eukaryotes have 80S ribosomes while prokaryotes have 70S ribosomes.
  • Around 62% of ribosomes are composed of RNA, while the rest is proteins.
  • The structure of free and bound ribosomes is similar and is associated with protein synthesis.

Function of Ribosomes:

  • Assembles amino acids to form protein..
  • The DNA produces mRNA by the process of DNA transcription.
  • The mRNA is synthesized inside the nucleus and transported to the cytoplasm for the process of protein synthesis.
  • The ribosomal subunits in the cytoplasm are bound around mRNA polymers. The tRNA then synthesizes proteins.
  • Site of protein synthesis.
