Short note on Xylem

Xylem

Definition:

Xylem is a vascular tissue that transports water throughout a plant’s body.

Discovery:

The first step in understanding xylem structure was taken by Marcello Malpighi.

Structure:

Xylem cells constitute the major part of the mature woody stem or root. They are stacked end to end in the center of the plant. Xylem is composed of mainly four types of cell in which some of them are living and some of them are dead.

  • Tracheids
  • Vessels
  • Xylem Parenchyma
  • Xylem Fibres

2 ImportantTypes of Xylem

Xylem is mainly of two types:

  • Primary Xylem
  • Secondary Xylem

They both perform the same function but they are categorized depending on the type of growth.

Functions of Xylem

  • Transporting water and some soluble nutrients(minerals and inorganic ions), from the roots to the entire plant.

Transporting water at the site of photosynthesis and other parts of the plants
