Why is the Mitochondria called the Powerhouse of the Cell

6 Important Reasons which proves that Mitochondria is the Powerhouse of the Cell

Mitochondria called the Powerhouse of the Cell for the following reasons

  1. Mitochondria is a double membrane-bound semiautonomous organelle present in the cytoplasm of the cell which possesses its own ribosomes and genetic material.
  2. The proteins synthesized by the proteins in mitochondria are utilized to generate ATP or adenosine triphosphate from the food.
  3. The ATP acts as the energy currency of the cell, because of which the whole body and cell get energy.
  4. The regular structure of the mitochondria’s inner membrane is quite complex. It has numerous folds that forms a layered structure known as cristae, which aids in increasing the surface area of the organelle.
  5. The mitochondrial matrix is a viscous fluid containing  protein mixture and enzyme. Ribosomes, inorganic ions, nucleotide cofactors, mitochondrial DNA, and organic molecules are also present.
  6. The enzymes present in the matrix play an important role in the synthesis of Adenosine Triphosphate molecules.

Thus, Mitochondria are referred to as the powerhouse of the cells.
