9 Important Difference Between Golgi Bodies and Mitochondria

Golgi Bodies and Mitochondria

Golgi bodies or Golgi apparatus are the organelles found in eukaryotic cells that are responsible for processing, sorting, and packaging proteins and lipids for transport to other parts of the cell or for export outside of the cell. Mitochondria, on the other hand, are organelles found in eukaryotic cells that are responsible for generating the majority of the cell’s energy through the process of cellular respiration. Mitochondria is also called the “POWERHOUSE” of the cell. Golgi bodies and mitochondria are essential for the proper functioning of eukaryotic cells, with Golgi bodies involved in the processing and transport of proteins and lipids and mitochondria involved in energy production.

Difference Between Golgi Bodies and Mitochondria

FactorsMitochondriaGolgi Bodies
1DefinitionMitochondria are organelles in eukaryotic cells and are usually of bean shape.Golgi Bodies are a type of organelles in eukaryotic cells and are usually stacks of flattened membranes and vesicles.
2Main FunctionProduces ATP of the cells.Golgi bodies are involved in sorting, modifying and packaging of proteins for secretion.
3DNA AvailabilityDNA is available.DNA is not available.
4Number of membranes surrounding the organelleDouble membrane organelles.Single membrane organelles.
5ShapeBean shaped structure.Maze kind of structure.
6RibosomesContains ribosomes inside the organelle.Do not contain ribosomes inside the organelle.
7Major rolePowerhouse of the cell.Secretion organ of the cell.
8CompositionComposed of cristae.Composed of tubules, vesicles, cisternae and golgian vacuoles.
9Presence in animal & plant cellsNumber in a particular cell depends upon the cell type, tissue and organism.Animal cells contains few large golgi bodies while plant cells contains small golgi bodies inside the cell.
