Class 7- Chapter 3 – Heat – Heat Conductivity in Metals (Activity 3.6)

Wax on Metal: Discovering Heat Conduction

In Activity 3.6: Heat Transfer Through a Metal Rod, you’ll explore how heat moves through a metal rod and understand the concept of heat conduction in solids.

Objective

To observe and understand how heat is conducted through a metal and why some parts of a metal object can be hot while others are cooler.

Materials Needed

  • A metal rod or flat strip (aluminium or iron)
  • Small wax pieces
  • A stand or bricks to hold the rod
  • A heat source (like a flame)

Steps to Follow

  • Prepare the Rod: Attach small wax pieces at nearly equal distances along the metal rod.
  • Set Up the Rod: Secure the rod horizontally on a stand or between bricks.
  • Heat One End: Apply heat to one end of the rod and observe what happens to the wax pieces.

Expected Observations

  • The wax pieces closer to the heated end will start melting and falling off first.
  • Gradually, wax pieces further away will also start to melt and fall.

Understanding the Concepts

  • Heat Conduction: Heat is transferred along the rod from the hotter end to the colder end. This movement of heat through the solid is called ‘conduction’.
  • Why Only Solids?: In solids like metals, particles are closely packed. When one end is heated, these particles vibrate and pass their energy to neighbouring particles, transferring heat along the rod.
  • Practical Application: This is why when you heat one end of a metal spoon, the other end also gets hot after some time.

Conclusion

This activity shows how heat conduction works in solids like metals. It helps you understand why certain parts of a metal object can be very hot while others are not, depending on their distance from the heat source. The experiment demonstrates a fundamental concept in physics – the transfer of heat through conduction in solids.
