Class 7- Chapter 3 – Heat – Convection in Air (Activity 3.9)

Feeling the Heat: Convection in Air with a Candle

Activity 3.9: Transfer of Heat by Convection in Air demonstrates how heat transfer occurs in gases, like air, using a practical experiment with a candle.

Objective

To understand how heat is transferred through air by the process of convection.

Materials Needed

  • A candle
  • Matches or a lighter

Steps to Follow

  • Light the Candle: Carefully light a candle and place it on a safe, stable surface.
  • Feel the Heat: Position one hand above the flame and the other hand to the side of the flame. Make sure your hands are at a safe distance to avoid burns.

Expected Observations

  • The hand above the flame will feel hotter than the hand on the side.
  • The heat feels stronger above the flame because that is where the hot air rises.

Understanding the Concepts

  • Convection in Air: When the candle heats the air, the hot air expands, becomes less dense, and rises. This upward movement of hot air is convection.
  • Replacement of Hot Air: As the hot air rises, cooler air from the sides moves in to take its place near the flame. This cooler air then gets heated and rises, continuing the cycle.
  • Real-Life Example: This principle is similar to the sea breeze experienced in coastal areas. During the day, the land heats up faster than the water, causing the air above the land to heat up and rise. Cooler air from over the sea then moves in to replace it, creating a breeze.

Conclusion

By doing this activity, you learn how convection works in gases like air. It helps you understand that hot air rises and cooler air takes its place, a fundamental principle in physics explaining how heat is transferred in fluids, including air. This concept is important in understanding weather patterns, heating systems, and many natural phenomena.
