Class 7- Chapter 3 – Heat –  Body Temperature Variations (Activity 3.3)

Checking Temperatures: A Class Experiment

In Activity 3.3: Measuring Body Temperature of Friends, you’ll learn how to measure body temperature using a clinical thermometer and explore how body temperatures can vary among different people.

Objective

To understand that human body temperature can vary slightly and learn how to use a clinical thermometer correctly.

Materials Needed

  • A clinical thermometer

Steps to Follow

  • Prepare the Thermometer: Clean the thermometer with an antiseptic solution. Check that the mercury level is below 35°C.
  • Measure Temperature: Take turns to measure the body temperature of at least 10 friends. Place the bulb of the thermometer under the tongue, close the mouth, and wait for a minute before taking the reading.
  • Record Observations: Write down each person’s name and their temperature in a table like Table 3.2.
  • Compare Temperatures: After everyone has been measured, compare the temperatures.

Expected Observations

  • You’ll notice that not everyone has the exact same temperature.
  • The temperature readings will likely be between 35°C and 42°C.
  • Some temperatures may be slightly higher or lower than the average of 37°C.

Conclusion

Through this activity, you learn that the normal human body temperature of 37°C is just an average. In reality, everyone’s temperature can vary a little. It’s normal to have a body temperature that is slightly higher or lower than 37°C. This activity also teaches you how to use a clinical thermometer correctly and the importance of cleanliness while using it.

Important Points

  • Always clean the thermometer before and after use.
  • The clinical thermometer is designed only for measuring human body temperature.
  • The normal range of human body temperature is between 35°C and 42°C.
  • Variations in body temperature are normal and part of human physiology.
