7 Difference Between Mitochondria and Endoplasmic Reticulum 

Mitochondria and the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) are two important organelles found in eukaryotic cells. Mitochondria and Endoplasmic Reticulum are essential organelles that play important roles in the metabolism and energy production.Mitochondria are often referred to as the “powerhouses” of the cell because they produce most of the cell’s energy through the process of Cellular Respiration. The Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER), on the other hand, is a network of interconnected flattened sacs and tubules that plays a key role in protein synthesis and folding, as well as lipid metabolism. The ER is also responsible for the transport of molecules from the cytoplasm to the cell membrane.

Difference Between Mitochondria and Endoplasmic Reticulum

1. Definition	Mitochondria are double membrane cell organelle of eukaryotes.	Endoplasmic Reticulum are tubular cell organelles which divides the cell into several compartments.
2. Origin	Mitochondria generally originates from plasma membrane or nuclear membrane.	Endoplasmic Reticulum is originated from nuclear membrane and plasma membrane both.
3. Shape	Mitochondria is of  oval, spherical, rod or thread like structure.	Endoplasmic reticulum is of tubular, flat sac-like structure.
4. Size	legth: 1.5μm-10μmbreadth: 0.5μm-1μm	sac: 40-50 μmtubule: 50-180 μmvesicles: 30-140μm
5. Number	In a eukaryotic cell, just one mitochondria is present but the number of mitochondria varies from organism to organism.	The number of ER is not fixed in the cell, it varies from cell to cell.
6. Function	Mitochondria promote cellular respiration and synthesizes ATP.	It synthesizes protein in the formation of the skeletal framework in a cell.
7. Types	No type.	Two types(Soft & Rough).
