Mitosis and Meiosis
Mitosis is a type of cell division which gives two genetically identical daughter cells from a single parent cell. Mitosis is responsible for growth, repair, and asexual reproduction in the organisms. In the process of mitosis DNA in the parent cell is replicated and then separated into two sets of chromosomes. Each set of chromosomes is packaged into a nucleus in each of the two daughter cells.
Meiosis is a type of Cell division that gives four genetically diverse haploid daughter cells from a single parent cell. Meiosis is very essential for sexual reproduction in organisms. In the process of Meiosis DNA in the parent cell is replicated and then the homologous chromosomes pair up and exchange genetic material in a process called crossing over. This recombination of genetic material produces new combinations of alleles. It increases genetic diversity in the offspring. The homologous chromosomes then separate into different daughter cells during the first meiotic division. In the second Meiotic Division the sister chromatids separate . It results in the production of four haploid daughter cells.
Where does Mitosis Occur?
Mitosis occurs in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells, which are cells that have a well-defined nucleus and membrane-bound cell organelles.it occurs in the somatic (non-reproductive) cells of organisms during growth, development, and repair.
Mitosis can occur in different types of tissues and organs, depending on the specific organism and developmental stage
- In animals Mitosis occurs in various tissues and organs throughout the body . Example skin, liver, and intestines.
- In plants Mitosis occurs in the Meristematic tissues. It is responsible for growth and development of the plant.

Where does Meiosis Occur ?
Meiosis occurs in the Reproductive Organs of sexually reproducing organisms.
- In animals meiosis occurs in the testes of males and the ovaries of females. In male testes Meiosis produces sperm cells and in the female ovaries Meiosis produces egg cells.
- In plants meiosis occurs in the Anther and Ovary. In the anthers, meiosis produces spores that develop into pollen grains. In the ovary meiosis produces egg cells.
