Tissues are groups of cells that work together to perform a specific function in multicellular organisms.
10 Important Utilities of tissues in Multicellular organisms with Examples are as follows –
- Coordination and Communication between cells
Tissues are responsible for facilitating communication within the organism. Example- Nerve tissue carries electrical impulses between cells, which allows the organism to respond to external stimuli and coordinate its movements.
- Specialization of cells
Tissues allow for the specialization of cells which makes them perform specific functions. Example- Muscle cells contract to generate movement or nerve cells transmit signals.
- Protection and support-
Tissue plays an important role in protecting the organism from external threats. Example- Skin tissue forms a barrier that keeps pathogens and harmful substances out of the body, connective tissue helps to cushion and protect internal organs etc.
- Homeostasis
Tissue also plays an important role in maintaining homeostasis in the organism. Example – blood vessels transport nutrients, oxygen, and waste products throughout the body, Sweat glands help to regulate body temperature etc.
- Metabolism-
Tissue also plays an important role in the metabolism of the organism. Example – muscle tissue is responsible for movement and generates energy through the process of muscle contraction, while liver tissue is responsible for detoxifying the body and producing bile.
Tissues like blood vessels and lymphatic vessels transport nutrients, oxygen, and waste products throughout the organism.
- Sensory detection:
Tissues play an important role in metabolism by providing the structural and functional support for the various metabolic reactions that occur in the body of an organism. Tissues like muscle, liver, and adipose tissue, have specific roles in metabolism, it includes the storage and utilization of energy, Regulation of blood sugar levels, and the production of hormones and enzymes that control metabolic processes.
- Adaptation:
Tissue plays an important role in adaptation in organisms. Example the specialized tissues in plants like the waxy cuticle on leaves helps to prevent water loss, In animals tissue adaptation can be seen in the muscle development which allows the movement and the ability to escape predators or catch prey, The development of specialized neural tissue in the brain and nervous system allows for advanced cognitive abilities such as memory, learning, and problem-solving.
- Repair and Regeneration
Tissue plays an important role in repair and regeneration. When an injury or disease occurs different types of tissue have different functions to repair it. Example – when a wound occurs the wound healing is done by many tissues,it involves the formation of new blood vessels, the formation of new cells, and the formation of new collagen fibers. This whole process allows the skin to regain its strength, integrity, prevent infection and promote healing.
- Specialization
Tissue specialization is important for a large number of activities and functions. Example, lung tissue helps in breathing and absorbs oxygen, Gut tissue helps in digestion of food.
