6 Important Differences between Fragmentation and Regeneration

Differences between Fragmentation and Regeneration

Fragmentation and Regeneration

Fragmentation and Regeneration are the types of Asexual Reproduction. It  does not involve the fusion of gametes or sexual reproduction.

Fragmentation is a type of asexual reproduction in which an organism splits into smaller pieces and each piece develops into a new individual. The fragmentation process can be caused by physical or environmental factors such as damage, stress, or growth conditions.

Regeneration is the ability of an organism to regenerate, or regrow, lost or damaged tissues, organs, or limbs. It is a type of asexual reproduction that occurs in many species of animals and plants.

In both Fragmentation and Regeneration, the offspring produced are identical to the parent organism, as there is no exchange of genetic material.

Difference between Fragmentation and Regeneration

FragmentationRegeneration
1A type of Asexual reproduction in which aparent organism breaks into fragments, each fragment is  capable of growing independently into a new organism. It is type of asexual Reproduction organisms have an ability to give rise to new organisms from their broken or cutted body parts. Not all cut body part will grown into new organism
2It occurs in Invertebrates .It occurs in both vertebrates and invertebrates.
3It is a type of asexual reproduction in which the newly formed parts from the parent form new organism It is type of asexual reproduction method as well as formation of new body part which is lost. The newly formed can be new organism or the new body part.
4Fragmentation  occurs in organisms of simple body structure .Regeneration occurs in organisms with complex body structure
5 No specialized cells are involved in fragmentation. Specific cell divide to form mass of cells which further differentiate to form different tissues.
6No specialized cells are involved in fragmentation . Regeneration specialized cells  proliferate and form a mass of cells. The cells from the mass differentiate to form different cell types and tissues.
Example Spirogyra, sponges , hydra,  sea anemone   Example Planaria, Hydra , starfish
