Write a short note on Golgi Apparatus (Golgi Complex)

Definition :

Materials that are synthesized in ER have to be transferred to different parts of the cell, this transporting of the materials is done by a specific cell organelle called golgi apparatus. 

It is located in the cytoplasm next to the ER and near the cell nucleus. 

Discovery:

The Golgi apparatus was first described by Camillo Golgi.

Structure :

• Golgi apparatus (Golgi Complex ) usually consists of a system of membrane-bound fluid-filled vesicles that are arranged in parallel to each other.
• They are generally arranged in the form of stacks referred to as cisternae.  

Functions :

• Materials which are synthesized near to ER are transported by golgi apparatus.
• Storage, modification and packaging of products are the main functions of golgi apparatus.
• It converts polymers from monomers in some cases.
• Formation of lysosomes also takes place with the help of golgi apparatus.
• Synthesising cell wall and plasma membrane also takes place with the help of golgi apparatus.
