Cytoplasm Short Note

Definition:

The fluid that fills up the cells is referred to as the cytoplasm.

Discovery:

In 1863, a Swiss biologist named Rudolf von Kolliker coined the term “Cytoplasm”.

Structure:

  • Cell organelles have various structures which exist inside cells. 
  • All these structures are distinct and perform some particular functions.
  • The cytoplasm is an essential component of the cell and is available in a semi-liquid jelly-like material.

Function:

  • Enable cells to maintain their turgidity, which enables the cells to hold their shape.
  • Home to many activities of the cell as it contains enzymes, molecules, that are crucial in the breakdown of the waste.
  • Also involved in many metabolic activities.
  • Provides a shape to the cell.
  • The nucleus, cytoplasm and all other living components of the cell together make up the protoplasm of a cell.
