Why is Vegetative Propagation Practiced for growing some types of Plants

Vegetative Propagation

It is a type of asexual plant reproduction in which, new plants are obtained from a part of the parent plant. Under favorable conditions, various parts of the plant like root, stem and leaves develop into new plants.

Vegetative Propagation Practiced for growing some types of Plants because of the following reasons

  1. Plants that have lost their capability to produce seeds can be propagated by this method.
  2. It helps to grow plants bearing superior traits, as they are genetically identical to the parent plant.
  3. It is used for growing plants which require a longer time to grow and become mature.
  4. Reproduction by vegetative parts takes place in a shorter time.
  5. New plants produced by vegetative propagation spread very fast in a small area.
  6. All the good characteristics of the mother plant are retained by the daughter plants.
  7. It Maintains genetic stability. The plants produced are genetically similar to the parent plant and have all its characteristics.
  8. Plants raised by vegetative propagation can bear flowers and fruits earlier than those produced by seeds.
  9. It also makes possible the propagation of plants such as banana, orange, rose and jasmine, which have less capacity to produce seeds.
