Why is DNA copying an essential part of the process of Reproduction?

Reproduction is the ability of living organisms to produce new individuals similar to them.

The basic event is the creation of DNA copy and additional cellular apparatus by the cells which are involved in the process.

The reproducing organisms procreate new individuals. The individuals so produced are similar to each other and their parents.

This similarity between siblings and offspring to their parents occurs because of the DNA present in them.

During reproduction, the information for inheritance of characteristics is passed on from the parents to the offspring in the form of DNA. DNA in the cell nucleus is the information.

DNA copying is an essential part of the process of Reproduction for the following reasons

  1. DNA contains information for the inheritance of features from parents to offsprings.
  2. DNA codes for proteins required by an individual.
  3. DNA presents in nucleus of cells are the information source for making protein. .  If DNA is not copied during reproduction, correct proteins will not be formed and the structure of the individual will be entirely different.
  4. Errors in DNA copying will lead to evolution.
  5. DNA makes the organism look similar to each other.
