What is the role of Seminal Vesicles and Prostate Gland

Seminal vesicles

A pair of lobulated glands located between the posterior surface of the urinary bladder and the rectum. A duct from each seminal vesicle joins the corresponding sperm duct  just before it unites with the urethra.

During the process of emission and ejaculation each seminal vesicle empties its contents into the ejaculatory duct shortly after the vas deferens empties the sperm.

The seminal vesicle plays a crucial role in the male’s fertility.

Role of Seminal Vesicles

  1. It helps produce healthy semen and functional sperm.
  2. Produce a secretion which serves as a medium for the transportation of the sperms.
  3. The mixture of this fluid and the sperms produces a milky fluid, the semen.
  4. In the sperm duct, the sperms are sluggish, but by the addition of this secretion, they become active.
  5. Provides energy-giving secretions  to the whip-like action of sperm tails.

Prostate Gland

A bilobed structure which surrounds the urethra close to its origin from the bladder. It secretes slightly alkaline prostatic fluid which is milky, thick, sticky or jelly like.

Role of Prostate Gland

  1. The prostate gland serves a fertility function as it secretes the seminal fluid that helps to nourish and transport the sperm.
  2. It helps in sperm activation.
  3. The secretion of the prostate gland combines with the secretion of the seminal vesicle and so the semen gets coagulated. In the coagulated semen, the mobility of sperms is reduced and so their energy is conserved.
  4. It pours an alkaline secretion into the semen as it passes through the urethra, which neutralizes acid in female’s vagina.
  5. Increase bulk volume of semen by reacting with female cervical mucous to make it more receptive to sperm movement by causing backward and reverse peristaltic movement in the uterus and fallopian tube.
