(a) What are the major landforms?

Ans. The major landforms are mountains, plateaus and plains.

(b) What is the difference between a mountain and a plateau?

Mountain Plateau
1A mountain is any natural elevation of theearth surface.A Plateau is an elevated flat land.
2A mountain may have a broad base and small summit with a height of more than 600 meters. A Plateau is a flat-topped table standing above the surrounding area.
3Mountains are rich in forests.Plateaus are the great reservoirs of different minerals.
4The Himalayas, Alps and Aravallis are some of the mountains in the world.Deccan plateau, Tibet plateau, and African plateau are the major plateaus in the world.

(c) What are the different types of mountains?

Ans. Mountains are of three types

  1. Fold mountains
  2. Block mountains
  3. Volcanic mountains.

Fold Mountains

  • The Himalayan Mountains and the Alps are young fold mountains with rugged relief and high conical peaks.

Block Mountains

  • They are created when large areas are broken and displaced vertically e.g. Rhine valley and the Vosges mountain.

Volcanic Mountains

  • They are formed due to volcanic activity. Mt Kilimanjaro in Africa and Mt Fujiyama in Japan are examples of such mountains.

(d) How are mountains useful to man?

Ans.Mountains are useful to man in following ways:

  1. The mountains are a storehouse of water.It is a storehouse of water in the form of glaciers.
  2. Reservoirs are made and the water is harnessed for the use of people.
  3. Water from the mountains is also used for irrigation and generation of hydro-electricity.
  4. The river valleys and terraces are ideal for cultivation of crops.
  5. They have a rich variety of flora and fauna.
  6. They provide places for Tourism.

(e) How are plains formed?

Ans. Plains are large stretches of flat land. 

  • Most of the plains are formed by rivers and their tributaries.
  • The rivers flow down the slopes of mountains and erode them. 
  • They carry forward the eroded material. 
  • Then they deposit their load consisting of stones, sand and silt along their courses and in their valleys. It is from these deposits that plains are formed.

(f) Why are the river plains thickly populated?

Ans. Plains are thickly populated because of the following reasons

  • They are suitable for both habitation and agriculture. 
  • The plains are very productive due to the availability of fertile soil. 
  • River plains are thickly populated because construction of the transport network is easy.The developed transport network influences the growth of population. 
  • There is more construction possible as more flat land is available for building houses, as well as for cultivation.

(g) Why are mountains thinly populated?

Ans.

  • The life on mountains is tough due to harsh climate, scarcity of cultivable land and unsuitable conditions for human settlement.
  •  Mountains are thinly populated because they have steep slopes and lack in fertile soil. These conditions are not favourable for agriculture.
  • The steep slopes on the other hand, make transportation and physical communication difficult. Mountain areas in the world are not much developed.
