Description of Double Fertilization Diagram labels

  1. Antipodals – Antipodals are the two cells found at the opposite end of the egg cell in a flowering plant (angiosperm). They play a role in providing nutrients to the developing embryo and help to regulate its growth.
  2. Polar Nuclei – Polar nuclei are two nuclei located in the center of the female gametophyte (ovule) in a flowering plant ( angiosperm). They play a crucial role in fertilization by fusing with the sperm cells to form the endosperm.
  3. Egg Cells – Egg cell is a female gamete that contains a single nucleus. It is located in the ovule of a flowering plant and is the target of the sperm cells during Fertilization.
  4. Synergids– Synergids are two cells located near the egg cell in a flowering plant (Angiosperm). They play a role in attracting the sperm cells towards the egg cell and guiding them to the point of fertilization.
  5. Release of Sperm Cells -Release of sperm cells occurs when the male gametophyte (pollen grain) germinates and releases its two sperm cells towards the female gametophyte (ovule).
  6. Endosperm (3n) – Endosperm is the result of the fusion of the polar nuclei and one of the sperm cells. Endosperm contains three sets of chromosomes (3n) and provides nutrients to the developing embryo.
  7. Zygote (2n) – Zygote is the result of the fusion of the egg cell and one of the sperm cells. Zygote contains two sets of chromosomes (2n) and is the beginning of the development of a new plant.
