In this chapter, we explore three engaging activities from the “Nutrition in Plants” chapter, tailored for Class 7 students. These activities not only enhance understanding of fundamental concepts in plant biology but also encourage hands-on learning.
Table of Contents
Activity 1.1- Stomatal Opening
- Concept- This activity focuses on understanding the process of photosynthesis and the role of sunlight in it.
- Procedure- Two potted plants are used. One is kept in darkness for 72 hours, and the other in sunlight. After this period, an iodine test is conducted on the leaves of both plants to check for starch, an indicator of photosynthesis. The plant kept in the dark is then exposed to sunlight for a few days, followed by another iodine test.
- Learning Outcome- Students learn about the necessity of sunlight for photosynthesis and how plants use their leaves to produce food.

Activity 1.2- Observing Fungal Growth on Bread
- Concept- This activity helps students understand fungal growth and its environmental requirements.
- Procedure- A piece of bread is moistened and left in a warm, moist place. After 2-3 days, the bread is observed for the growth of fluffy fungal patches. These patches are examined under a microscope or magnifying glass to see the structure of the fungus.
- Learning Outcome- Students observe firsthand how fungi grow and spread, understanding the conditions that favour fungal growth and the role of fungi as decomposers in the ecosystem.

Experiment to Test the Occurrence of Photosynthesis
- Concept- The experiment demonstrates the crucial role of sunlight in photosynthesis.
- Procedure- A potted plant with broad leaves is used. Parts of two leaves are covered with black paper, blocking sunlight. After exposing the plant to sunlight for several days, an iodine test is performed to check for starch presence in both covered and uncovered parts. The process is repeated with a second leaf.
- Learning Outcome- This activity visually illustrates the importance of sunlight in photosynthesis. Students understand that chlorophyll in leaves requires sunlight to produce food for the plant.

Each of these activities provides a practical approach to understanding key concepts in plant nutrition. They encourage students to observe, experiment, and understand the intricate processes of plant life, making learning both interactive and enjoyable.
