Activity -Arrangement of teeth and different type of teeth – Class 7

Experiment-  Identifying Types and Functions of Teeth

Materials Required-

  • Mirror
  • Washed hands
  • Piece of apple or bread
  • Table 2.2 for recording observations

Procedure-

  • Begin by washing your hands to ensure cleanliness.
  • Stand in front of a mirror and open your mouth to observe your teeth.
  • Count the number of teeth you have in both the upper and lower jaws. Record these numbers in Table 2.2.
  • Use your index finger to feel and identify different types of teeth in your mouth.
  • Take a piece of apple or bread and bite into it.
  • Observe and note which teeth you primarily use for biting and cutting the food.
  • Continue chewing the food and observe which teeth are involved in the piercing and tearing of the food.
  • Record your observations in Table 2.2, categorizing the teeth based on their functions.

Explanation-

  • This experiment aims to help you identify the different types of teeth in your mouth and understand their specific functions in the process of chewing and grinding food.
  • Humans have four main types of teeth, each with a distinct function-
    • Incisors- These are the sharp, flat-fronted teeth used for cutting and biting into food. They are located at the front of the mouth.
    • Canines- Canines are pointed teeth used for piercing and tearing food. They are typically situated next to the incisors.
    • Premolars- Premolars are flat-topped teeth with ridges used for chewing and grinding food. They are located behind the canines.
    • Molars- Molars are larger, flat teeth with multiple ridges and are also used for chewing and grinding food. They are found at the back of the mouth.
  • By counting your teeth and observing their shapes and positions in your mouth, you can identify each type. The experiment encourages you to actively participate in understanding the functions of these different types of teeth by biting into food and noting which teeth are primarily involved in biting, tearing, and chewing.
  • The table provided allows you to record your observations and classify your teeth into categories based on their functions. This experiment provides a practical and visual way to learn about the diverse roles your teeth play in the mechanical breakdown of food before digestion.
