Table of Contents
Definition:
A nucleus of a cell is referred to as a double membraned eukaryotic cell organelle that contains a genetic material and is only found in eukaryotes.
Discovery:
Nucleus was discovered by Robert Brown in 1831.
Structure:
- Nucleus is engirdled by a structure referred to as the nuclear envelope.
- The membrane distinguishes the cytoplasm from the entire content of the nucleus.
- The chromosomes of the cells are also confined within it.
- Chromosomes are having the presence of DNA which provides the genetic information.
- The nucleus is suspended in the cytoplasm in the middle of the cell.
Distribution:
- Uninucleate cell~Contains a single nucleus.
- Bi-nucleate cell~Contains two nuclei at a time.
- Multinucleate cells~Contains more than two nuclei at a time.
- Enucleate cells~No nucleus.
Functions Of Nucleus of a Cell :
- Nucleus contains the hereditary information of the cells.
- Controls the cell’s growth and reproduction.
- Nucleus is the home of some important cellular processes.
- DNA Replication is possible in the nucleus as well.
- The nucleus is also the site of transcription.
