Types of energy for Class 5

Types of Energy

Mechanical Energy

The energy of an object due to its motion or position is called mechanical energy.

Example: a moving car or a hammer hitting a nail has mechanical energy.

Heat Energy

Also known as thermal energy, it is produced when substances are heated up. A matter is made up of atoms that move within it. When the substance is heated, the increase in temperature causes these particles to move faster and release energy in the form of heat.

Example: the warmth of the sun, baking a cake in the oven and the warmth coming out of heaters are examples of thermal energy.

Electrical Energy

Electrical energy is the movement of electrons (the tiny particles that makeup atoms, along with protons and neutrons). Electrons that move through a wire are called electricity.

Example: Lightning is an example of electrical energy.

Wind Energy

The energy present in moving air or wind is called wind energy.

Wind is used to produce electricity using wind turbines or wind energy conversion systems.

Light Energy

Light is the only form of energy that is visible to us.

It helps us to see the objects around us.

It is a form of kinetic energy wherein radiation travels in waves. It is made up of tiny particles known as photons, which are tiny packets of energy. It is given off by stars, light bulbs, and even hot objects.

Example: Light energy from the sun is used by plants to prepare their food; the sun also gives us natural light.

Solar Energy

The energy that we get from sunlight is called solar energy. It can be used to carry out many functions on the Earth. Solar energy is abundant on Earth and is also non-polluting. When electricity is obtained from burning fuels, smoke and other polluting gases are formed. But when we use solar energy to get electricity, there is no pollution.

Examples:

  • Solar panels convert solar energy into electrical energy, which is used to run machines.
  •  Solar cookers use sunlight to cook food.

Sound Energy

Sound is generated when an object vibrates due to a force applied to it.

Example: when a drum is hit, sound is produced. Sound energy can be transferred through a solid, liquid or gas.

Hydropower Energy

Hydroelectric power is produced with moving water

.Just as wind can move things, flowing water can also move and carry things.

It is a renewable source of energy.

Example: The energy in flowing water is used to turn turbines and generate electricity.

Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy is obtained from the heat inside the Earth.

Example: Hot springs and steam from inside the Earth are used to generate electricity. This Way of generating electricity also does not produce polluting smoke and gases.
