Large Intestine
The large intestine is a continuous, tube-like channel via which food passes along the human digestive system.
Structure of Large intestine
The large intestine is wider and shorter than the small intestine and is about 1.5 meters in length. It is a combination of the cecum, colon, rectum, and anal canal. The colon is the largest portion of the large intestine.
6 Sections of Large Intestine
Large intestine is divided into 6 sections:
- Cecum and appendix
- Ascending colon
- Transverse colon
- Descending colon
- Sigmoid colon
- Rectum
Functions of Large Intestine
- Formation and elimination of feces
- Absorption of vitamins
- Absorption of water and electrolytes
- Antibody production
- Acid reduction
