Corrosion

Corrosion is the type of Oxidation reaction in everyday life in which the open surface of the metals are slowly eaten away by the reaction of air, water and chemicals present in the atmosphere.

Effects of corrosion

  • Corrosion causes damage to car bodies, bridges, iron railings, and all objects made up of metals, specially those which are made up of iron.
  • Corrosion is a full process in most of the cases. Every year tons of various metals, especially iron, get wasted in most of the country.
  • Corrosion can be prevented by painting, galvanizing, electroplating etc.

Examples of corrosion

Iron articles are Shiny when new, but get coated with reddish brown powder When left for sometime. This process of corrosion of iron is also called rusting.

The black coating on Silver and the green coating on copper are also examples of corrosion.
